The Legacy of Phoebe Hearst: Hacienda del Pozo de Verona
Long before San Simeon was built, the rolling foothills of the Tri-Valley were home to Hacienda del Pozo de Verona. Built for philanthropist Phoebe Apperson Hearst, this estate was a Mediterranean masterpiece.
Designed by trailblazing architect Julia Morgan and A.C. Schweinfurth, the mansion was a cultural hub for royalty and dignitaries. Its Spanish Mission and Moorish architecture didn't just house art; it inspired the aesthetic of the entire Pleasanton hillside.
1924–2024: From Private Estate to Premier Neighborhood
After Phoebe Hearst’s passing, her son, William Randolph Hearst, sold the property in 1924. This marked the official birth of Castlewood Country Club.
While the original hacienda was tragically lost to fire in 1969, the spirit of the estate lives on. Today’s clubhouse and the surrounding custom homes continue to reflect that sense of grandeur and privacy that the Hearst family cherished a century ago.
